How to Create a talking Dubstep Yoi Synth in Garageband

Although GarageBand isn’t as feature-laden as some of the more popular DAW’s, it’s still great audio workstation.  The fact is, sometimes less is more – especially for younger, inexperienced producers.  We recommend learning the ins and outs of GarageBand before moving on to more complicated audio software.  This will give you a solid foundation to build on when you decide to make that leap forward.

In today’s demonstration, we’ll show you how to make a talking Yoi synth using only the tools within GarageBand.

Here’s what our synth will sound like when we are finished:

Getting Started.

Step 1 – Load an Anolog Mono synth onto an instrument track.

The settings you see in the image below are pretty much the default settings so you won’t need to change much.

Slide the Mix fader slightly to the right and lengthen the Glide some.  Shorten your Decay a touch as well.

Step 2 – Load an Automatic Filter onto your instrument track.

Set your Frequency to 29%.  Set your Resonance and your Intensity to about 65%.

Choose Up & Down for your Mode and set your Speed to 1 bar.

Note:  Try increasing your Speed to create more of a wobble synth.

Step 3 – Add a Bit Crusher to your instrument track.

The Bit Crusher is great for getting your synth sounds to “talk”.

Set your Resolution to 15 bit and your Sample Reduction to 23x.

Play around with these settings and you’ll notice that the characteristics of your talking synth will change.  Tweak to your liking.

Step 4 – Add a Speech Enhancer to your instrument track.

The Speech Enhancer will make your talking synth more pronounced.

Choose the preset ‘Male Narrator Noisy’.

Summary

You could easily take this sound further by throwing on a bit of Overdrive or Chorus.  It might also benefit from some slight EQ and Compression.  Furthermore, don’t be afraid to experiment – it’ll help you develop your own style!
