How to create a Nero Bass Synth in Massive

Thanks for joining us here at Loop Galaxy!  Today, we’ll learn how to create a Nero style bass synth in Massive.  If you’re an electronic producer and are not familiar with Nero – you should be.  They’ve produced many hits ranging from dubstep to house.

Getting started…

Step 1 – Set up your Oscillators

Set Osc 1 to a Saw I waveform and detune it slightly.  Max out your Wt-position, Intensity, and Amp.

Set Osc 2 to a Square waveform and detune it slightly.  Max out your Intensity and Amp.

Set Osc 3 to a Chome Formant waveform.  Turn your Wt-position to 1 o’clock.  Max out your intensity and amp.

Step 2 – Set up your Modulation Oscillator

Select Phase for Osc 2 and turn it up slightly.

Step 3 – Adjust your Amp Envelope

Set a moderate Attack and quick Release.  Max out your Decay Level.

Step 4 – Choosing a Filter

We want to use a Bandreject filter in this case.  Turn your Cutoff to 2 o’clock.  Set your Bandwidth and Resonance to 12 o’clock.

Adjust your filtering slider to Series and set your mix to Mix 2.

Step 5 – Inserting Effects

Start with some tube saturation (B Tube) to beef it up.  A moderate Dry/Wet mix and some mild Drive will do the trick.

Next we’ll add some Reverb.  Leave your Density and Color set to default.  A bit of Size and a mild Dry/Wet mix will help add some depth.

Step 6 – Polish off with some EQ

Increase your Low Shelf slightly.  Max out the Frequency with your Boost set to 3 o’clock.

Summary

In the event you want more grit, you could easily throw on a Parabolic Shaper.  For added character you could try substituting your Reverb for a Flanger.  Don’t be scared to take this sound a new direction.  Just be sure to save your presets along the way!
