How to Create a fat Reese Bass in Ableton

The “Reese Bass” is one of the more popular sounds in modern Drum & Bass music.  In a nut shell, it’s basically a dual saw wave with some slight de-tuning and and a good bit of stereo width.

In today’s tutorial, we’ll take a look at how to create this sound in Ableton’s Operator.

Step 1 – Set up your Oscillators.

Set Oscillator A to a Saw D wave form.  Lower your Coarse to 0.5 and detune to +10.

Set Oscillator 5 to a Saw64 waveform.  Set your Level to -7.3 dB and detune to +25.

Step 2 -Change your algorithm type and add some stereo spread.

Increase your spread to 88% and choose the parallel algorithm (next to your Time control).

Step 3 – Set up your Filter and LFO.

Set your Filter to Low SVF with a frequency of 3.71 kHz and a Resonance of 2.56.  Select a Soft Shaper for your Filter.

Step 4 – Adjust your LFO.

Leave your LFO set to a sine wave and choose Sync from the drop down menu.  Adjust your rate to 1/4 and your Amount to 7%.
